eSIM transfer made easy by Android: how it works

Android users have noticed the ability to transfer eSIM cards between two Android smartphones. We knew that Google was working on developing this feature , but we were unaware of its arrival. Enough to make it easier to change your smartphone at a time when eSIM tends to become more popular.

How eSIM transfer works on Android

As  Android Police reports , the feature has been noticed by some new Pixel 8 owners . Some also had another Pixel, but we realize that this functionality is not only available on Google smartphones . If all Android devices (from a certain version) seem compatible, this is not the case with all operators. T-Mobile seems to be the first compatible telephone operator , with all its international brands (like Deutsche Telekom in Germany).

Samsung also seems to be taking care of its efforts in the transfer of eSIM. The feature was added as early as One UI 5.1 ( Android 13 ), but only offered it between Galaxy devices . Now on One UI 6 , no need to stay with Samsung . Furthermore, on Android, when you begin the eSIM transfer procedure, other nearby smartphones can receive a “ pop-up ” alert to install the card.

Since the eSIM is not a “  physical ” SIM card that you insert or remove from a device , you cannot just remove it from your old smartphone and place it in the new one. In the case of eSIM, transfer procedures vary from one operator to another. In most cases, you have to remove the eSIM from the first smartphone and install it on the new one using its application. It is also possible to generate a QR code with the first smartphone which is scanned with the second.
